Investing.com – U.K. stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Mining , Aerospace & Defense and Gas, Water & Multiutilities sectors led shares higher.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 gained 0.02% to hit a new 1-month high.

The best performers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Fresnillo PLC (LON: FRES ), which rose 4.23% or 44.00 points to trade at 1,085.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Phoenix Group Holdings PLC (LON: PHNX ) added 2.74% or 17.00 points to end at 638.50 and Severn Trent PLC (LON: SVT ) was up 2.29% or 62.00 points to 2,775.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were JD Sports Fashion PLC (LON: JD ), which fell 10.60% or 9.86 points to trade at 83.12 at the close. Vistry Group PLC (LON: VTYV ) declined 3.80% or 23.80 points to end at 602.00 and Spirax-Sarco Engineering PLC (LON: SPX ) was down 2.66% or 160.00 points to 5,860.00.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the London Stock Exchange by 912 to 840 and 593 ended unchanged.

Shares in Fresnillo PLC (LON: FRES ) rose to 3-years highs; rising 4.23% or 44.00 to 1,085.00. Shares in Phoenix Group Holdings PLC (LON: PHNX ) rose to 52-week highs; rising 2.74% or 17.00 to 638.50.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.93% or 30.71 to $3,315.31 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.73% or 0.45 to hit $61.58 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.70% or 0.46 to trade at $64.92 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 0.45% to 1.34, while EUR/GBP unchanged 0.07% to 0.84.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.67% at 99.31.
