Investing.com-- Honda’s (TYO: 7267 ) motorcycle making unit in India plans to add a fourth production line at its Gujarat plant, expanding its annual capacity by 650,000 units by 2027, the company said on Thursday
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s (HMSI) new production line will increase the facility’s total output to 2.61 million motorcycles, making it Honda’s largest such plant globally.
The company will invest 9.2 billion rupees ($110 million), and will create 1,800 jobs and focus on 125cc-class models.
Once operational, HMSI’s total production capacity across its four Indian plants will rise to 7 million units annually. The expansion follows Honda’s milestone of 70 million cumulative units produced in India since 2001.
President Tsutsumu Otani said the move reinforces Honda’s commitment to India, the world’s largest motorcycle market. The company currently manufactures popular models like the Activa and CB350 series, alongside electric scooters such as the Activa e.
HMSI’s Gujarat plant, opened in 2016, had already tripled its capacity to 1.96 million units before this latest expansion, the company said.
