Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Clean Technology , Materials and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.06% to hit a new all time high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Definity Financial Corp (TSX: DFY ), which rose 11.30% or 7.84 points to trade at 77.25 at the close. Meanwhile, Ngex Minerals Ltd (TSX: NGEX ) added 5.54% or 0.81 points to end at 15.43 and Aya Gold & Silver Inc (TSX: AYA ) was up 4.69% or 0.55 points to 12.27 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Spin Master Corp (TSX: TOY ), which fell 3.41% or 0.86 points to trade at 24.36 at the close. Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (TSX: AQN ) declined 3.23% or 0.25 points to end at 7.50 and Algoma Steel Group Inc (TSX: ASTL ) was down 3.15% or 0.24 points to 7.39.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 485 to 404 and 99 ended unchanged.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.25% to 11.86.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.18% or 5.95 to $3,322.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.51% or 0.92 to hit $61.81 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.05% or 0.67 to trade at $64.24 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.14% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.16% to 0.64.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.36% at 99.78.
