Investing.com-- OpenAI is developing new ChatGPT features that could reduce users’ reliance on Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT ) productivity apps, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The new tools allow users to create and edit spreadsheets and presentations compatible with Excel and PowerPoint, directly within ChatGPT, without using Microsoft apps. New buttons integrated into the chatbot interface guide users to generate these files, the report said.

The company is also working on new ChatGPT agents, AI tools that automate multi-step tasks, capable of generating reports from public or corporate data, scheduling appointments, and performing basic web tasks, The Information reported.

These features expand ChatGPT’s use in office settings, potentially posing a threat to Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) and Microsoft’s productivity suites.

While the release timeline remains unclear, the file formats are open source, so OpenAI does not require Microsoft’s permission to support them, the report said.

The tools may still face limitations, including slow performance and a lack of built-in storage or collaboration functions, the report added.
